VALENTINE HUYGHUES-DESPOINTES
Artist Statement
From childhood, Valentine Huyghues Despointes discovered the world of excellence in fine crafts by following her father, a car saddler, on a daily basis in his workshops. Having been immersed in this creative environment where the precision of the gesture and the work of a noble material are mixed: leather, as a matter of course she chooses to make it her profession.
Trained first in fashion design and then graduated from the Ateliers Grégoire (Paris) in saddlery and leather goods, Valentine learns to use the tools and craft techniques of the profession. His creative process is based on leather from the end of the collection of great houses. Recovering these quality skins also allows him to obtain a wide variety of colours, in small quantities, while having a durable ethic. For example, she buys from the Réserve des Arts where she buys many bright colours, a particularity of her creations.
Insatiable in her appropriation process, she designs colourful and playful pieces inspired by the plant kingdom, an exotic bestiary or even the consumable. With her meticulous gestures and passionately acquired know-how, Valentine Huyghues Despointes likes to surprise by creating sometimes incongruous objects that embellish everyday life, at the crossroads of design and applied arts.
