Carlo was artist before becoming a tattooist, he populated his world with a whole mythology of hybrid beings and protective amulets, reminding us of both Navajo sand paintings and Miyazaki’s fantastic creatures. His training is nothing ordinary: he tells us that he started tattooing after meeting a taxidermist at an exhibition at the Recyclart art center in Belgium. The development of his very particular pencil stroke, mixing naive art and Amerindian art, comes after a trip to Mexico and Guatemala in 2008.
A multidisciplinary artist, he works as a photographer in parallel, always very sensual and delicate. Open, talented, brazen, Carlo Amen participates in making tattooing a whole art, strong in symbolism, surprising and sensitive.
